2017 | What's In. What's Out.

In a couple of recent articles we've discussed what we think 2017 is going to look like as far as paint color trends and kitchen trends.  Today we're expanding our 2017 trends and covering a more broad spectrum.  We stumbled upon an article from mydomaine outlining what's hot and what's not for 2017 according to Mary McDonald.  We have to stay.  She's on point.  The decor she says will be a "not" for 2017 is what we're over-seeing right now.  It's stuff that has hit the retail market so anyone can get it and everyone has it...and it's about dead.  Whereas, all of the things she predicts will be hot for 2017 are, in fact, hot.  So today's post is basically a re-cap of her predictions be....well...she's right!

Style-wise...she says, Hollywood Regency is NOT hot for 2017.  If you forgot what the Hollywood Regency style looked like, picture this: bright colors, lacquered furniture, bold contrast, and glam.  It's fun, but probably not something you want to look at for a long time.

Instead of this style, McDonald says the European style is in.  It goes back to the traditional roots a little but feels more mature.

Finish-wise, we're slowing down on the gold & brass craze.  This finish is still good in moderation but don't over-do it.

Instead, organic elements with natural flaws and more of an earthy feel are hot, hot, hot!  It used to be that anything raw or exposed wood meant it was rustic but now the organic elements seem to pepper everything.

Pattern-wise, that oh-so-popular Chevron is waaaaaay OUT.  We're so over Chevron, we can't even stand it.  It was fun while it lasted but now we're making way for a much more feminine, unexpected pattern---the big, bold, floral.  We were pretty shocked too when florals started to re-emerge but I guess we couldn't be too surprised.  Everything comes back around, right?  And they're really done right this time.  Big, painterly, water-color looking flowers will make any room pop!

Accent-wise, McDonald says that those dang Edison bulbs are going bye bye.  Don't get us wrong, they're still great for coffee shops and the occasional game room or bar area, but for anything else, skip it!

Instead of going old-worldly, jump ahead and get some of that super-smart technology that does all of the thinking for you.  Lighting that adjusts itself based on the time of day and your pre-sets.  Window treatments that do the same.  Technology has come a long way!  Let's take advantage.

Overall, we think 2017 is looking preeetty good.  These changes are welcome and will make everything look better!
