How To: Make a Window-less Bathroom Feel Bigger
Everybody in Florida knows the drill when there's a hurricane threat--hide in the bathroom since it's usually one of the only rooms without windows. For some reason, even though bathrooms and kitchens sell homes, bathrooms get the last of the "window real estate". Unfortunately for a room that's used so frequently, this can decrease the functionality of a bathroom. However! That's not where the story ends. The good news is, we've got some tips and tricks for you to use to make your window-less bathroom feel larger even if it's not very big at all!
Consider your finishes! The more reflective elements in a window-less bathroom, the larger the opportunity for light to show and open-up the space. For this reason, it's important to consider the finishes you use in a small bathroom. Even though many people are drawn the oil-rubbed bronze, it may be better to go with a polished chrome or brushed nickel for a lighter airy-er feel. Glass and lucite work well for this also! And don't just consider your fixtures--think of accessories as well!
Get creative with lighting! Since you don't have very much natural light (if any!) coming into to this poor bathroom, find a way to add layers of other lighting even if they are artificial. You may have a pendant light or some other sort of overhead lighting in addition to sconces that frame the mirror. I also like having a small lamp in a bathroom that can be used as a night light or a softer light kept on in the evening. When hanging your lighting, consider where the mirror is in relationship to it. If it can be in a path to reflect any of the artificial light that will also contribute to making the room feel larger!
Don't be scared of white! While glass and silver reflect light and adding light is good, the wall color also makes a huge impact! White is reflective, so if you paint your bathroom walls white, you'll have added one more reflective property to your bathroom! White accessories a great in any bathroom too, though. White towels, rugs, shower curtains, toothbrush holders--go with it! You're just opening up your space a little more with each white object you use in the place of something darker or colorful.
Consider your furniture. While a lot of people like dark wood and a big solid sink base, something a little more open-feeling is your best bet in a dark bathroom. You want a space like this to feel light and airy but a heavy piece of furniture will detract from that! Consider a pedestal sink or a vanity with legs instead of storage. You'll be surprised at the difference it makes!
Bathroom can be very difficult to work with even though they're so incredibly necessary! We hope this post has help you, if you have a window-less bathroom, consider new ways to make it feel larger!
